Neglected Culverts Can Potentially Cause Major Floods

Neglected watercourses can cause serious flooding events. The consequences of a blockage during a severe storm are immense, as even a minor obstruction can halt the necessary flow of water. Neglect leads to a build-up of debris, creating a direct link to the likelihood of a flooding catastrophe.

Unfortunately, extreme rainfall events are becoming commonplace, and enclosed channels are more likely to cause flooding than open ones. These drainage structures range from narrow pipes to larger constructions made from concrete, metal, stone, or plastic.

The size of the intake is a major factor in determining risk. Small conduits are more prone to flooding compared to waterway crossings with an opening wider than six metres. While wider designs are less likely to be completely obstructed by floating debris, a partial blockage can still trigger significant overflow. Subsequent storms then add to this accumulation, leading to major flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.

What Happens When Subsurface Infrastructure Becomes Blocked?

A blocked conduit can cause local and wide-scale flooding with severe consequences. This occurs when an obstruction reduces the system’s capacity; in fact, water flow only needs to be reduced by 20% for serious drainage problems to emerge. Debris typically includes organic matter—such as fallen leaves, branches, and weeds—alongside discarded rubbish.

When underground crossings are neglected, the flow of waterways like streams can be diverted overland as levels rise suddenly. New flow paths open up upstream, causing significant damage to residential properties, commercial sites, and public infrastructure. Furthermore, when these channels fail, there is a heightened danger to the public, business operations may cease, and local wildlife habitats can be destroyed.

Whose Responsibility is Watercourse Maintenance?

The responsibility for keeping cross-drainage assets clear lies with the landowner. Their actions should in no way exacerbate the potential for flooding, which often necessitates the use of a specialist maintenance and repair company. Professionals ensure that trash screens are well-maintained and all debris is removed safely.

Preventative action is vital, as it is often difficult to access problem areas during an active flooding event. Strict safety procedures must be followed, and specialist equipment is usually required. When drainage infrastructure is properly managed, it enjoys an extended lifespan and helps landowners avoid expensive repairs. A professional structural inspection will identify potential lining and construction problems before they lead to a major incident.
